Problem Description

Solutions to poverty are usually top-down and information gathered from the poor are usually for policy-makers use and not for the poor themselves. The Poverty Stoplight allows poor families to self-diagnose their level of poverty across 50 poverty indicators and develop a customized plan to eliminate the deprivations they suffer. Our motivation was our frustration with our microfinance program, which after many years of serving the poor did not guarantee that our clients overcome poverty. The Poverty Stoplight helps poor families answer two questions: Is it worth it and Can I do it, which deal with motivation and skills. By geotagging households we can identify the demand and supply of locally available solutions to different poverty indicators.
