This solution addresses protection against sea level rise and flooding in the Northeast U.S. for residents of Bridgeport, CT, and coastal cities in general.
Problem DescriptionA resilience framework focuses on protecting coastal cities, such as Bridgeport, against sea level rise and flooding caused by storm surge and rainfall. Integrated lines of resilience are critical to inhabiting the coast, with site and district level measures complementing engineered solutions and natural buffers. The city’s coastal and riparian edges are productive places of exchange, and the restoration of these zones can be the basis for a revived regional ecology and economy. It is an economic strategy for reinvention, which uses environmental restoration to stimulate neighborhood revitalization. The framework includes places throughout the city that provide safety and services in storms, and instructs people on how to transition to a way of living and thriving with water.
This solution was created during the Rebuild by Design competition. Bridgeport’s identity is founded upon the relationship of its people to water. Reclaiming this identity and what it means to live at the water’s edge is critical to the city's future. The first phase of implementation for the project was funded by HUD.
