Problem Description

Farmer’s access to seed of superior quality is essential to increase agricultural productivity, resilience, and food security in West and Central Africa. This project on seed systems seeks to analyse and strengthen farmer-managed seed initiatives and use of, farmer preferred sorghum and priority legume varieties in the areas where the seed is produced. Ultimately, this will serve local farmers of both genders and create a sustainable market for improved seed.

Building Blocks

Story

The aims of this project are to: 1) Identify institutional and social measures that contribute, limit, and/or sustain farmer managed seed enterprises. Document and share the successes, failures and challenges of local seed dissemination in order to strengthen it or introduce it into local communities and contexts; 2) Identify tools and approaches for marketing and communication that enable farmer managed seed enterprises to enhance uptake of new varieties or hybrids of traditional cereal crops by small scale farmers in Mali and Burkina Faso. Determine the impact and if and how those tools are reaching all sectors of the community; 3) Identify and understand gender relevant consequences resulting from the dissemination of specific new cultivars of sorghum in the target regions of the seed cooperatives in Mali and Burkina Faso.

Sustainable Development Goals

On September 25th 2015, countries adopted a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years. This solution covers the following goals:
