At the most basic level, interconnections can be sketched out (by hand/in graphics programs) to aid understanding and support dialogue. It may be the least scientific of ways, but can be a good start to establish basic ideas. It can be the only tool used for understanding interconnectivity, or it can be the first of many tools used. In the case of the latter, it is a launch pad or base for additional building blocks. It is a highly subjective tool, but it can also form a base for data validation and adjustments that will become more grounded in data.
